Screw the Concept - Just f&#%ing paint!
I am the type of painter who simply needs to paint, regardless of idea. Stumbling upon a deeper concept, if it happens, organically evolves with the work.
When not emotionally engaged with a specific subject matter, I always return to still life. The most accessible objects are the ones on my painting table. As I worked a painting deadline I became consumed with concept, agonizing over what the work was trying to say. That anxiety was toxic to my painting. One day in the studio I just screamed out loud to myself "screw the concept, just f&#%ing paint!" I laughed and in that, accessed the freedom to continue...to paint just because.
